    Applicuts are pre-cut shapes of fabric ready to be appliqued onto your work.  We have a pile of Applicults who’ve lost their adhesive so we are selling them out at just..

    All you need to do is give them a spray with some 606 Fusible Web Spray, or apply some Vlisofix to get them stuck!  Lots of designs to choose from!!

    Q How often should I get my machine serviced?
    A If you sew 3 days a week, then you should get your machine serviced once every 12 months.
    Q How much does a service cost?
    A A mechanical machine or overlocker service is $120, an electronic machine is $135 and an embroidery and sewing machine is $160.
    Q What accessories do I need to bring when I check in my machine?
    A You will need the foot control, the power lead, the normal sewing foot, decorative stitch sewing foot, and buttonhole foot.  Embroidery machines will also need the embroidery unit, small hoop, embroidery foot and a bobbin wound with bobbin fill.  If you are bringing in an overlocker, include your threads so that it comes back to you threaded.
    Q Do I have to book?
    A No, just bring it into store – we’ll take care of it from there!.

    Simplicity Bias Tape Maker

    Everyone is loving the new Bias Maker from Simplicity.  This fantastic little machine does all of the hard work to make perfect bias!  A variety of optional extra tips vary from neat little 1/4 inch bias through to half fold for binding, and all you have to do is cut the strips and join them.  The machine does the rest – no more burnt fingers or metres of bias piled up on the floor around your ironing board!!

    Tricky Threading Gets Less Tricky

    We all approach our quilts with great enthusiasm right up to the last bit where we have to hand-stitch the binding on.  At least the needle is easier to thread with Clover’s Needle Threader…pop in the needle and press the button.  That’s all it takes to thread that tiny little needle.

    Technically Speaking.

    When storing or transporting your machine, there are a couple of small steps that you can take to protect it.  Always put your presser foot down (on a slip of fabric) and turn the flywheel to also keep the needle down.  When winding up the foot control, avoid wrapping the cord around and around it.  This can cause the join between the lead and the control to bend and break the connection wires.  Most importantly, don’t leave the foot control and power lead plugged into the machine and then wrap it around the whole machine.  This can damage either the internal plug unit or the needle bar.

    Just about all of us have a mobile phone, and we love to personalize them with unique covers.  Finally someone in the sewing world has caught onto this and now we have the same option for our sewing machines.  Brand new from Bernina come Skins!     Winding a bobbin sounds like a pretty simple thing to do, but there are a couple of hitches that can trick us all up.

    Firstly, its tempting to wind a pile of bobbins so that you are always prepared, especially for embroidery machines, but its important to remember that the bobbin winding motor of your machine wasn’t made for long periods of use.  Try not to wind more than 3 to 4 at a time.

    Also, having the right tension is important for getting the right bobbin.  Check that the thread is going where it should and not around any extra hooks or loops.  Incorrect threading when winding the bobbin can make your bobbin either too loose giving poor stitching results, or too tight which will cause it to heat up so that it either breaks or can’t be removed from the winder.  As cliche as it sounds, refer to your instruction book.

    And finally, and this little point causes big trouble, only use bobbins for your brand of machine.  The wrong bobbin will give poor stitching results.  As soon as you get your new machine home, throw away the old metal ones kicking around your sewing room!

    Technically Speaking.
    ImageAutomatic Needle Threaders are a life-saver, but they need some tender treatment.  Needle Threaders are essentially a very fine hook that slips into the eye of the needle and catches the thread when it is dragged in front of it.  When using the Needle Threader, always make sure that the needle is in its highest position first.  If this is not the case, the hook will not find the eye, and instead press against the needle itself.  This often bends the hook or breaks it off completely.  If this does happen, don’t panic – Needle Threaders are a consumable item and can be easily replaced.

    Winter winds bring more than just the cold.  The dry weather and blustering gales stir up the dust, and this can be bad news for our sewing rooms.  Dust has the habit of getting into all of the little gaps and spaces in our machines, especially the tension and threading areas, and we assume that because our machines are stored in their hard covers, that we are protecting them from this.  Dust is a sneaky creature and to protect our machines from it, it is best to add a fabric layer between your machine and its cover.  Use a towel, or your last stippling sample, to cover your machine before placing the hard cover over it.  This is a good habit to get into all-year-round.  You could go one step further and make your own quilted liner, using the inside dimensions of your case as a pattern.

    The Rotary Lite is a great little gadget to keep you out of the dark when cutting.  This nifty little light attaches to your Clover Rotary Cutter and removes the uncertainty caused by the shadow of the edge of your ruler.

    Also available is “Stick-Em Up” by uQuilt, a generic light designed to attach to most other brands of cutter.
