Take a New Direction In Sewing!

Heard a lot about EMBROIDERY MACHINES but not entirely sure what everyone is talking about?

Embroidery Machines stitch beautiful sewn designs onto towels, t-shirts, quilt blocks…anything. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and prices, and give the satisfaction of creative sewing without involving hemming, mending or darning. Purchase a plain, run-of-the-mill blouse on sale and then personalize it effortlessly on your embroidery machine for a unique item of clothing created by you; or keep a couple of new towels in the cupboard to embroider for birthday, engagement or housewarming gifts. Technically Speaking.

Winter winds bring more than just the cold. The dry weather and blustering gales stir up the dust, and this can be bad news for our sewing rooms. Dust has the habit of getting into all of the little gaps and spaces in our machines, especially the tension and threading areas, and we assume that because our machines are stored in their hard covers, that we are protecting them from this. Dust is a sneaky creature and to protect our machines from it, it is best to add a fabric layer between your machine and its cover. Use a towel, or your last stippling sample, to cover your machine before placing the hard cover over it. This is a good habit to get into all-year-round. You could go one step further and make your own quilted liner, using the inside dimensions of your case as a pattern.

Lighten Up Your World!

The Rotary Lite is a great little gadget to keep you out of the dark when cutting. This nifty little light attaches to your Clover Rotary Cutter and removes the uncertainty caused by the shadow of the edge of your ruler.

Blue Pen’s Best Friend!

Nothing makes marking fabric easier than the good old Blue Water Soluble Pen – just make your mark, sew your stitches and then wash it off with a damp cloth. Put an Aquash Brush Pen next to it and everything gets easier still!

Turn a Corner.

Adding binding to your quilt is the final touch to a lot of hard work so its important to finish it correctly. One of the trickiest parts of attaching binding is doing the corners, so here is a run-down on how to get them nice and neat.

1:sew the seam right up to 1/4″ from the edge of the next side
2: pinch the binding to make a 45% triangle as you fold it around the corner, and press it out of the way to the left
3:start a new seam at the very top of the next edge

Free Label Template!

In the last few week’s we have had lots of requests for quilt labels. Here is a great alternative…

EQ Printables are Inkjet Fabric Sheets – treated fabric that will go through your printer. Simply print out the free template onto the fabric, allow to dry for 15 minutes, soak to rinse away excess ink, and then once dry – cut to size and applique like any other fabric Available by-the-sheet in 2 sizes – A4 @ $5ea and A3 @ $9ea.

This technique can be done by you at home – we used Word to make up these – and you can add personal images such as photos and quotes. Remember – always test print on plain paper first to make sure that your printer settings and sizing is correct.

Cut and Go Round and Round and Round…

It seems like the more patchworking that we do, the smaller pieces we have to cut. The Fiskars Rotating Mat makes this job easier and quicker, while eliminating stretching or wobbly cuts. This quality cutting mat rotates easily, so that once you have placed your fabric on it, you can trim it on any side without having to lift it off. Perfect for cutting with templates like Marti Michell.

A Little Shot of Steam…
